רות בעלת תואר ראשון בהיסטוריה של האמנות התנדבה במדינתה בסיוע לילדים חולי סרטן ותמיד חלמה להגיע לישראל. "אני ציונית אמיתית שאוהבת את ישראל וכל חיי דמיינתי את הרגע שאזכה להגיע למדינת היהודים" סיפרה אתמול. "כל חיי הקפדתי לשמור שבת ולחגוג את החגים אבל ההרגשה לא היתה שלמה. אני מאמינה שמקומי הוא בישראל ולא בשום מקום אחר."

   גיסה של רות המשמש רב הקהילה היהודית הקטנה במדינה הציג בפני רות את ההזדמנות להצטרף ל"מסע" המציע לצעירים מהתפוצות להתנסות בחיים בישראל באמצעות מגוון תוכניות לימוד והתנדבות. הוא סיפר לה על מדרשת דבורה בירושלים המשלבת לימודים לצד חשיפה לתרבות הישראלית ולנופי הארץ והרעיון קסם לה. "זה היה כאילו הגיס שלי קיבל הכוונה משמיים. ברגע שהוא סיפר לי על היוזמה הבנתי מייד שהיא מתאימה לי והחלטתי להצטרף."

   רות השתלבה במהירות בלימודים ולצדם היא מופיע כליצנית רפואית בבית החולים ביקור חולים בירושלים ובבית האבות "ירושלים של זהב."

   "ישראל היא מדינה מדהימה עם אנשים מיוחדים שעוזרים לי להתאקלם בצורה הטובה ביותר. התכנון שלי הוא לעשות בעתיד עלייה לישראל."

   מנכ"לית מסע איילת שילה-תמיר מסבירה כי "הפרויקט נועד לחזק את הזהות היהודית של צעירי התפוצות ולהעמיק את הקשר שלהם עם ישראל. מאז הקמת מסע הגיעו לישראל כ65 000- צעירים מ60- מדינות אך זו הפעם הראשונה שצעירה מהרפובליקה הדומיניקנית מגיעה לישראל."

Dominican and Zionist

   Ruth Abreu, aged 25 - is the first Jewish woman from the Dominican Republic participating in the MASA project of the government and the Jewish Agency. Ruth, who had never left the borders of her country, recently decided to change her life and came for a period of studies and volunteering in Israel.

   Ruth, who has a BA in art history, volunteered in her country to help children with cancer and always dreamed of coming to Israel. "I'm a real Zionist who loves Israel and all my life I imagined the moment I'd merit to come to the Jewish state," she said yesterday. "All my life I was careful to keep the Sabbath and celebrate the holidays but it did not feel complete. I believe that my place is in Israel and not anywhere else."

   Ruth's brother-in-law, who serves as the Rav of the country's small Jewish community, presented to Ruth the opportunity to join MASA, which offers young people from the Diaspora to experience life in Israel through a variety of programs and volunteering. He told her about Midreshet Devora in Jerusalem, which combines learning with exposure to Israeli culture and the natural sites of the country, and the idea appealed to her. "It was like my brother-in-law received guidance from Heaven. Once he told me about the initiative I understood immediately that it fits me, and I decided to join."

   Ruth is quickly integrating at school and on the side she appears as a "medical clown" at Biqur Holim Hospital in Jerusalem and in the nursing home "Jerusalem of Gold."

   "Israel is an amazing country with very special people who help me adjust in the best way possible. My plan is to make 'Aliya to Israel in the future."

   Program Director Ayelet Shilo-Tamir explains that "The project aims to strengthen the Jewish identity of Diaspora youth and deepen their relationship with Israel. Since the establishment of MASA, about 65 000  young people from more than 60 countries have arrived in Israel, but this is the first time that a young person from the Dominican Republic has come to Israel. "
